Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers of the United States government once stated quite famously “Those who would give up liberty so that they may achieve security deserve neither liberty nor security”. In any discussion of surveillance in a democracy, these words are quite relevant, even in these times. Quite a lot of people resent the ease by which privacy and freedoms are violated by surveillance equipment used by governments for improving security. The sad fact is, rights and liberty (including privacy), and total security cannot truly coexist in any democracy.
